Additional Herding Information from Dorothy Linn

Wolston Farms, site of the GSDCA 2004 Herding Trial
The following information was of particular interest to the GSDCA
Wolston Farms property is so large that there is more than enough room for pre set arenas for all three AKC Courses, A,B, and C,  including the non-regular Ranch Course and the Tests, enabling us to run everything simultaneously if we wanted to.
There is plenty of room for parking and spectators don't have to stand in the street.
There have been no legal problems with the breaking of zoning laws.
The grounds, located in Scio, is 20 minutes by good roads away from the host hotels and Fairgrounds. ( The Board recommendations are to keep the Herding Trials at approved and suitable sites no more than 1 hour away from any National -- including the location at Albany--- if at all possible)

 The sheep:
We will NOT be using any "range sheep" (actually Scotties and Shetlands ) as they would be considered -in Ian's words- "too flighty."

We will be using crossbred ewes of various sizes, shapes and colors (similar to Doyle Ivie's sheep at Perry ,GA)

These sheep are dog broke and have been worked by large, upright, loose eyed dogs, including Belgian Sheepdogs, GSD's, ACD,s and  also Aussies, and Shelties.
In fact, they will have been used for Ian's demos at the County Fair this last weekend.

A portion of this flock is being trained for HT and PT and will be used for Instinct Tests at the Fairgrounds. ( Instinct Test entry forms can be gotten from Doris Estabrook  Irrenhaus4@nanosecond.net   Pre-entries for the Instinct Tests close on Sept 18th, same as the Trial; hours of Instinct Tests- Tuesday 8AM to 1 PM at the Cascade Pavilion warm-up area.  Testers are Sandy Moore, Debbie Pollard, Linda Rorem.)

C Course sheep have been re- procured, following, according to Ian Caldecott, the unexpected pulling of the originally anticipated flock that was to come from Battleground, WA., two hours away.
Happily, the GSDCA is taking advantage of the nicest sheepherding facility in the Pacific Northwest and it is only 20 minutes from Albany.

Ian Caldecott states that any exhibitor with a high level dog may certainly come a few days early and work the sheep, particularly the C Course sheep, which will have become familiarized  to his property, but are generally more fond of their home fields and home dogs.

Ian's qualifications:
Has competed in Trials for 15 years, and hosted trials for 8 years. Taught all breed lessons for about 10 years.  Does many sheep demonstrations at the Linn County Fairs. This year hosted the largest USBCHA sanctioned sheepdog trial held in the state of Oregon.

Lastly---

The Herding Committee is comprised of exhibitors that have all shown GSD's at Trial levels: all of them support and work at the Trials no matter where they are in the country.  The two GSDCA Herding Field Chairs, Sandy Moore and Rosemary Joralemon, and our Herding Advisory, Linda Rorem ( Sandy and Linda are AKC Herding judges licensed for all 3 Courses and Tests)  collectively have handled, trained, or owned 5 all breed Herding Champions, 16 HX's, handled and trained 8 GSD AKC Champions, including a Grand Victor.  Sandy and Rosemary  owned and trained the German Shepherd Dog that gave the premier performance ( as the designated demonstration dog from the GSDCA) at the AKC's Advanced Herding Institute Seminar held two years ago in Raleigh, NC. This same great dog handled and trained by one of our Field Chairs, Sandy Moore, was used as the demonstration dog for the first GSDCA Seminar on the Ranch Course at our 2003 National in Florida
I might add that the entire Herding Committee travels on their own dime, whether to represent the GSDCA or  work at a Trial.
The GSDCA Committee members and Field Chairs have dogs with the ability to title on every AKC Course, A,B, or C.  This is the make-up of these GSDCA exhibitors and students of Herding that have the desire to look for fresh, new, perspectives in the Herding program that showcase the versatility of the GSD. An example is the introduction of the( every day, real life, utilitarian ) large flock Ranch Course, offered as a non-regular Course for the first time at our Trial on Sunday, to GSD's only.

Thank you for your support.
