GSDCA Phyllis Dobbs Versatility Competition

(Most Versatile German Shepherd Competition at the GSDCA National)

Overview:

In memory of Phyllis Dobbs, who bred, owned, and trained the first Triple Champion in the German Shepherd breed, the Most Versatile German Shepherd Competition at the GSDCA National recognizes those dogs that exemplify true versatility by successfully competing in a variety of events at the GSDCA National.

The Versatility Competition is open to all AKC registered or listed German Shepherd Dogs.  The dogs in the Versatility Competition must be currently owned by at least one member of the GSDCA in good standing.  Dogs must earn scores at the National in a minimum of threeof the following venues:  Agility, Conformation, Herding, Obedience/Rally, Tracking.  Obedience and Rally are considered one venue since the required skills are similar.  To participate in the Versatility Competition, competitors must fill out a Versatility Competition registration form and submit it with the registration fee by September 1, 2018, to ensure being listed in the catalog as being entered in the Versatility Competition (late entries will be accepted until October 6 but will not be listed in the catalog or receive a customized participation rosette).  Participants must enter the events in which their dog will compete directly with the appropriate event secretary.  For 2018, the registration fee for the Versatility Competition for all participants has been generously donated by Friends of Phyllis Dobbs.

During the National Specialty, participants must fill out and turn in a score sheet to the Versatility Chair each day.  The scoring for the competition ends after Best of Breed and the winner of the Versatility Competition will be announced at the Banquet and presented with the Phyllis Dobbs Versatility Award.  Competing dogs will receive a customized participation rosette.  The winner of the 2018 Phyllis Dobbs Versatility Award will receive a cold cast bronze statue of a German Shepherd Dog.

Scoring:

The Versatility Competition is based on a point accumulation system, with points being awarded according to schedule of points set forth in Appendix 1, based on performance in various events.  Generally, points will be awarded in Conformation for participation and placement. Points will be awarded in each performance event entered based on:

  • Qualifying runs
  • Maximum of 2 weighted scores (if applicable)
  • Additional points may be awarded for certain special achievements (e.g., High in Trial in Obedience).

Although Obedience and Rally are considered a single event for purposes of the three-event minimum, competitors can earn points from both Obedience and Rally.

Agility:   Any two qualifying runs that receive a score (Standard, Jumpers, FAST, Premiere) from the two GSD only days, will count as weighted scores towards the total points awarded in the Versatility Competition.  Versatility points will be computed as RAW SCORE plus points.  Although only two qualifying runs receive a weighted score, all other qualifying runs will receive points.

Conformation:   A dog may compete in both the Versatility Sweeps (a sweepstakes class open only to dogs entered in the Versatility Competition), and in the regular conformation classes.  All dogs participating (and not being excused for DQs or temperament), will receive 25 points for participation in the sweepstakes or in any regular class. Class placements will be awarded additional points.  Dogs competing in Best of Breed will receive 150 participation points, earning a Select, GV, GVX, or BOB will receive additional points.

Versatility Sweepstakes:  The purpose of offering a Versatility Sweepstakes class is so all Versatility dogs, even those that are spayed or neutered, may compete and earn participation points in conformation.  The sweepstakes would offer two classes, dogs and bitches, and would be judged following the Futurity/Maturity  finals on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.   The Versatility Sweepstake Judge is Mr. James A. Moses.   This is a non-regular class and must be entered via the Versatility Competition Registration Form.

Coursing:   The AKC defines the Coursing Ability Test (CAT) as a low stress way to get involved with dog sports as it is designed specifically for newcomers.  It is a pass/fail event and requires minimal training. The FAST CAT is a straight line 100-yard dash.  A dog will be able to earn a maximum of 20 points (2 Qs in the CAT and 2 Qs in the FASTCAT) in this event.  Coursing does not count toward the three-event minimum for participation in the Versatility Competition.

Dock Diving:   Dogs may earn points for up to eight Splashes (usually there are a maximum of four Splashes offered per day) during the GSDCA national.  Points are earned based on the distance the dog jumps in each Splash.  Dock Diving does not count toward the three-event minimum for participation in the Versatility Competition.

Herding:   Any two qualifying runs that receive a score (Course A, B, C, on ducks, sheep, or cattle) from the GSDCA herding trials (two A/B trials and two C trials), will count as weighted scores towards the total points awarded in the Versatility Competition. Versatility points will be computed as RAW SCORE plus points.  Although only two qualifying runs receive a weighted score, all other qualifying runs will receive points.

Obedience/Rally:   Obedience and Rally are combined as one venue since the skills are very similar. However, dogs may earn 2 raw scores in each event.  Any two qualifying runs that receive a score from the two GSD only days, will count as weighted scores towards the total points awarded in the Versatility Competition.  Because Obedience scores are based on a 200-point scale (unlike the other performance venues that are a 100-point scale) Obedience Versatility points will be computed as 50% of the RAW SCORE plus points. Rally Versatility points will be computed as RAW SCORE plus points.  Although only two qualifying runs from EACH event (Obedience and Rally) receive a weighted score, all other qualifying runs will receive points.

Tracking:     Tracking is the only sport in which we are awarding points for previously earned titles because the entries are very limited and dogs without titles are given entry priority over dogs that already have earned the titles.  Tracking will only count as one the three required venues if dogs are entered and qualify at the National.  To encourage people to enter the Tracking test at the National Specialty, dogs entered and qualifying at the National will earn more points than dogs with a previously earned title.

R.O.M. – No Report .................................................................................. Chris Carter/Candee Foss
Award of Excellence – Report ................................................................................... Laura Gilbert
ATAA – Report – Action Items.......................................................................... Cynthia Binder DVM
a. Method of Submission: Do we wish to
a) disallow the photo method of submission and stick with either the conformation ribbon or letter from a judge as is currently in the P&P manual?
OR
b) add the photo method as acceptable into the program guidelines in the P&P manual?
Personally, I feel it is much more encouraging/easier to a new GSD owner to submit the photos than have to try and find a judge willing to inspect and sign a letter.
My vote would be “b”, but I will uphold whichever method the board feels is proper.
b. Titles for Submission: My question is this:
Should we place some limits on what would be valid titles for submission, or should we allow submissions for anything and everything? An answer or guideline to this question is important as I move forward in redoing the overall point schedule for all the titles that are/can be submitted. Where do we put the limits? Do we want to have any limits? If we decide to keep all the current venues allowable, how do we decide if other new organizations also have the quality to qualify for title submissions? Allowing progeny owners to participate in any venue (even non-AKC ones) might mean more participation overall and having fun with your GSD is the ultimate goal. I will welcome all feedback in shaping this. My thought is this: to be a ‘title’ it must be earned outside of the home and with an outside authority/judge not related to the dog evaluating the dog. This would eliminate all ‘video’ venues and still allow titles from all other valid outside organizations to count (i.e. AHBA, USCAA, nose work, etc.).
Performance Award of Merit – No report – Action Item .......................................... Lori Nickeson
Approve Committee Members: Julie Degen and Kristen Brooks Jones
4. Breeders Code of Ethics – Report – Action Items ...........................................Sheila Williams-Metz
a. Approve Committee Members: Kay Bloom, Martha Simonett, Dr. Naomi Swanson, Stephanie Siegerwald.
b. Clarify what I and my committee are responsible for doing.
c. Develop a relationship with Ethics Chair and Board
d. Help in rewriting Breeders Code or returning it to the 2010 version
e. Direction from the board on what consequences are available if a signer of BCE does not adhere to their contract.
f. Obtain permission from board to develop a social media platform to discuss breeder ethics and education (with education committee) a closed group for breeders belonging to GSDCA.
g. And finally, it has already become clear to me that complaints are coming from folks who did not buy from a GSDCA member. With the marketing committee, I would like to target these people and educate them on the merits of buying from a member of our organization, as well as help them understand how to purchase a healthy, happy puppy—versus mail order puppy mills, and people who are simply putting two dogs together to sell puppies.
5. Ethics – Report – Action Item ............................................................................... Michelle Wallace
Approve Committee Members: Michael Huff, Diane Silver-Strasser
6. Futurity – Report - Action Items ................................................................................. Cyndi Flautt
a. Approve a new rule that would allow breeders to nominate litters after the litter nomination deadline in the litter’s Futurity show year. Currently a dog can be shown in a maturity for an additional $150 fee if he had not been entered in a futurity, but the litter must have been nominated. There is no procedure or extra fee that allows for a maturity dog whose litter was never nominated the year before.
Current nomination fees and schedules are as follows:
Before birth – 30 days $10
31- 90 days $30
91 – 120 days $100
121 days to close of nominations $150

The deadline to nominate is the day before the last futurity show closes in the litter’s Futurity show season year. For this year: The cut off to nominate litters (born 10/1/2016 to 9/30/17) who would be eligible to be shown in the 2018 Futurities is Tuesday June 26, 2018. (The day before the last 2018 Futurity show closes.)
For litters that are not nominated by the first deadline in the Futurity show season year, we are proposing a second deadline for nominations that would be the day before the last Futurity/Maturity closes in the dog’s Maturity show season year. The fee would be $200 to nominate. The $150 fee charged because the dog wasn’t entered in a Futurity would apply, plus the $30 entry/participation fee would be needed to actually enter a Maturity. The total cost is high enough to discourage breeders from nominating in the Maturity year, but also gives an owner an official rule and path to take if he wants to show in the Maturity and is willing to spend the money. If approved, we ask that this be effective immediately.
b. Approve a standing quarterly constant contact from the Futurity Committee to remind members to nominate their litters.
c. Confirm with the new Review Editor that the Futurity Victor/Victrix and Maturity Victor/Victrix will be featured on the front cover of the Review as required by the P&P.
d. Approve a request that Review Editor place a picture of the “Breeder of BIF” Regional trophy (if awarded) on the Review page with the region’s critique.

7. GSDC of Canada Liaison – Report – Action Item ......................................................... Jack Kilgore
To change our clubs’ policies regarding judging Intersex at either National. Currently, the GSDCA restricts judges to a 3-year waiting period after they judge intersex in Canada.
We’d like to propose both Clubs restrict judges from judging a National Specialty for 1 year. (i.e. if a judge does the GSDCA National in 2020, the earliest they could judge the GSDCC National would be 2022 (and vice versa).

8. GSDCA Review Marketing – Report – Action Item ......................................... Diane Silver-Strasser
Approve a budget of $300.00 for this committee. We strongly believe that our Editor should be a member of the Dog Writers Association of America; the last Review editor to be a member was Gail Sprock. It is important that the Review be eligible for many of the awards given by the DWA each year. Membership costs $85.00 for a new applicant and will be $50.00/year each year thereafter. The $85.00 would come from the proposed/requested $300.00 budget. Our other expense(s) will include envelopes and postage needed to send a copy of the appropriate Review to any foreign GSD fancier interviewed for The World of GSDs column.
9. Health & Genetics – No Report ......................................................................... Carolyn Gerganoff
10. Internet – Report – Action Items ................................................................................ John Ayotte
a. I am requesting approval of the following new members of the Internet Committee.
Ann Akerill – show results, Christina Leeka-Snyder – premium lists, Mark French
b. The BOD needs to either create a sub-committee to review the requirements for inclusion in the GSD Reviewed pedigree and critique site that we are trying to revive, or this task needs to be assigned to the GSDCA Archive committee to provide guidance to the Internet Committee.

13. Marketing -Report - Action Items ...................................................................................... Jeff Pyle

b. Approve a minimum of one (1) person from the Marketing Committee to be added as an Admin for the GSDCA Facebook page.
c. Budget: Request for $3,000 annual budget to allow for purchase of supplies, business cards, marketing orders, event planning, and ability to advertise in other publications to promote our events & club. This does not include the Marketing Video as this will be a larger endeavor and we will need to obtain quotes prior to submitting a proposal.

(6) p.135, Restriction on Judging in the US, Canada, and Mexico (North America) Preceding the National -- elimination of 3-year restriction for those having judged specials at Canadian National and replace instead with 6 mo. restriction (per October 2017 BOD minutes).

a. Approval of the following new members: Deb Smith, Travis Scarlett, Suzanne Jambe, Dara Conklin, Mary Tripp, Mary Golden, Bill Woolever, Dawn Sedorus, Blake Williams, Myra Shea.
b. Suspend all Challenges until further notice. At this point in time, we feel that these challenges do nothing but divide the clubs into the “Haves” and the “Have Nots”. Until we can prop the failing clubs up onto a stronger base, we have decided that it would be best to do away with the competitions. The parade at the National is also something that we were thinking that we could suspend. In it’s heyday, it was a sight to behold. Now, the clubs have shrunk tremendously. It is sad to watch the state of the parade nowadays.

Twelve left over engraved silver bowls. The engraving is show & class specific and cannot be buffed out. If no one wants them or has any ideas, they just need to be scrapped.
29. Temperament - No Report – Action Item .................................................................... Laura Gilbert
The Temperament Committee received a suggestion from previous Education Committee Chair, Maryellen Kish. We are in agreement, and would like the Boards approval for the two recommended changes in rules 6 & 8.
a. Rule 6 – Add the following: If in the judges’ opinion the dog is approachable, he should continue towards the dog in a friendly, natural relaxed manner. He should then speak to the dog while briefly touching him under the chin or on the side of the muzzle. He should not be overly friendly, fawn, hug or thump the dogs’ sides.
b. Rule 8 – Replace with the following: Dogs may be aloof but never fearful. Unsound, shy, overly anxious or noise sensitive dogs must be penalized. Excuse dogs you cannot examine because of extreme resistance to your touch. Awards must only go to dogs that are completely sound.
